Ebula virus
Ebola virus is considered one of the most dangerous viruses known to infect humans. It causes a severe viral illness known as hemorrhagic fever, with mortality rates that can reach extremely high levels during some outbreaks. The virus was first identified in 1976 in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and it was named after the Ebola River located near one of the outbreak areas.
The virus spreads through direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected person, including saliva, vomit, and feces. Infection can also occur through contact with contaminated objects and surfaces. Contrary to common misconceptions, Ebola is not transmitted through the air, and infected individuals become contagious only after symptoms begin to appear.
Symptoms usually develop after an incubation period ranging from 2 to 21 days. The illness often starts suddenly with high fever, severe fatigue, muscle and joint pain, headache, and sore throat. As the disease progresses, patients may experience vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and skin rashes. In severe cases, liver and kidney function can deteriorate, and serious complications such as internal or external bleeding may occur.
The world has witnessed several Ebola outbreaks, the largest of which occurred in West Africa between 2014 and 2016, resulting in more than 28,000 infections and over 11,000 deaths. The Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda have also experienced recurrent outbreaks in subsequent years, prompting international health authorities to strengthen surveillance and rapid response measures to contain the spread of the disease.
Although significant progress has been made in prevention, currently approved vaccines primarily target the most common and deadly strain of the virus, known as the Zaire strain. These vaccines have played an important role in controlling outbreaks and reducing both infection and mortality rates.
Ebola remains a major global public health challenge due to its high fatality rate and severe clinical manifestations. However, early diagnosis, rapid isolation of infected individuals, strict adherence to infection-control measures, and expanded vaccination programs remain essential tools for limiting its spread and protecting communities from its devastating impact.
